Market-leading oncology solution achieves Australian-first ADHA approval
The Charm oncology information management system has become Australia’s first to provide ePrescribing functionality, streamlining cancer patient care across the country.
The Magentus solution has met the Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) Electronic Prescribing Conformance Profile v3.0.1, aligning with Magentus’ vision to create a healthier society through world-class technology.
Electronic prescribing is a digital alternative to paper prescriptions that provides patients with a prescription for their medications via SMS or email.
Where previously clinicians and patients relied upon signed paper prescriptions, ePrescribing removes the need for patients, doctors or pharmacists to handle or store paper scripts that can be damaged or lost.
Cancer care team prescribers can now create electronic prescriptions within Charm, generating a unique electronic token that is sent directly to the patient or pharmacy where necessary.
As a secure, fast and efficient method of delivering prescriptions, ePrescribing supports digital health services such as telehealth to ensure continuity of care.
The solution also underpins improved medication safety by reducing translation and dispensing errors – extremely important in chemotherapy due to complex drug regimens and cycles.
Because ePrescribing reduces transition time between prescribing and dispensing by automatically loading data into the national Prescription Delivery Service (PDS), it helps hospital pharmacies ensure timely dispensing of chemotherapy and other medication.
Patient medication data can also be sent straight to My Health Record, enabling patients and health professionals to view a complete prescription history.
This provides better visibility for the prescriber and other health professionals of what combination of medications the patient is taking, enhancing medication safety by preventing duplicated medication prescription and reducing the potential for accidental or deliberate misuse and abuse of medications.
Electronic prescriptions also provide the ability to cancel and cease prescriptions that are no longer relevant to a patient’s treatment.
Margot Mason, Charm Product Lead at Magentus, said:
“We are proud to be Australia’s first and only oncology information management system with approved ePrescribing functionality and conformance. This module delivers our customers increased workflow efficiency, patient safety and financial benefits as the prescriber does not need to be physically at the hospital to issue electronic prescriptions. And because the patient does not need to be physically present to obtain a prescription, this ensures continuity of care for all patients such as those requiring nausea treatment post-chemo – particularly those located regionally and rurally.”
